To absorb 1 tonne of CO2, you would only need 6 pine trees to grow over the next 25 years. If each person in our district planted 1 tree, we would remove roughly 3,500 tonnes of CO2! That's the weight of 485 pick-up trucks!
Pine Marten Boxes
Brian Love has built 495 Pine Marten Boxes since 2010; roughly 100 per year.
2015 - 2016 Cultural Heritage Tree Project
Rainy River District Stewardship is working with the Town of Fort Frances, Fort Frances High School, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to identify and label trees along selected active transportation routes in Fort Frances.
The purpose is to educate the public and get them thinking about trees. Trees on municipal property are being mapped by high school students and Youth Stewardship Rangers using GPS. At the completion of the project, walking maps can then be created for those interested. Once all the tree locations and species have been identified, some will have small signs attached showing the tree's common, Latin (scientific), and Ojibway name. We have put up 6 signs so far. The signs are minimally invasive and will allow the tree to grow for 2 to 3 years before the sign needs to be inspected and possibly replaced.
Work began with grade 11 and 12 students at the end of the 2015-16 school year, continued on with the Youth Stewardship Rangers during the summer of 2015, and will continue with grade 11 and 12 students during the 2015-16 school year.
